25 years ago: Kansas spring weather ranges from blizzards to tornadoes

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 23, 1987:

  • It was a true Kansas spring in the northwest part of the state as tornadoes touched down and baseball-size hail piled into drifts up to a foot deep. Just to round things out, a winter storm contributed high winds and reduced visibility from blowing snow. The weather service had announced that there was more to come, with more winter storms and high winds as well as a flash flood watch in other parts of the state.
  • Kansas lawmakers were introducing measures to modify the state’s open-admissions policy for universities. Kansas University Chancellor Gene Budig, while remaining in favor of an open admissions policy, warned that students should have proper preparation and commitment before enrolling at KU.
