40 years ago: USD 497 adopts new policy on teachers’ aides

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 22, 1972:

  • The Lawrence School Board this week announced a change in the wording of the policy on classroom assistants. The word “paraprofessional” was hereafter to be used in place of “teacher aide.” Paraprofessionals were to be used when average class sizes were excessive or in such situations as team teaching. Teachers with a large number of students who had an aide working with them unanimously favored the plan, according to U.D.S. 497 Supt. Carl Knox.
  • “Make the Scene Clean” was the name officially given to this year’s city-wide cleanup campaign. During the week-long effort beginning April 1, the Women’s Division of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce would provide trash bags for participating organizations and coordinate cleanup program with schools, businesses, and other groups.
