25 years ago: Two early Haskell football stars enter Hall of Fame

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 22, 1987:

Two former Haskell students were inducted into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Lawrence Holidome. Former football players Peter Hauser and Mayes McLain were inducted posthumously to the hall, which had been instituted in 1972. Hauser had played for Haskell in 1904-05, and McLain (1925-26) had been “to the Haskell Indians what steam is to a steam engine,” according to a surviving teammate. McLain had played on the undeafeated 1926 Haskell team, scoring a record 253 points during a season that saw Haskell reach the achievement of being the highest scoring team in the country. Also inducted were Arthur S. Bensell and Alex “Sonny” Sixkiller. “This is quite a night for me, to be associated with these great men,” said Bensell. Sixkiller said that the honor was meaningful to his family. “I want my small boys to know what it means to be an Indian and an athlete,” he said.
