100 years ago: Humane Society plans benefit

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 22, 1912:

“At a meeting of the Humane Society held last evening it was decided that the ‘benefit’ to be given by that organization would take place April 4 when the Patee Nickel will be given over to the society. On that day all the money taken in at the Nickel will be given to the Humane Society for its work. There is no doubt but that a large crowd will be present. Among other matters that received the attention of the society was that of overloading horses, particularly those animals that have to do hauling to the University. Attention also was called to the poor condition of certain horses about town and arrangements made for caring for these animals.”

“Lou Rockland and Arthur S. Peck yesterday evening signed a contract with the Lawrence Amusement Co. whereby they lease Woodland Park for the coming season. These two men will have entire charge of all amusements and concessions at the Park and will endeavor to furnish the town with high grade entertainments this year. They took possession of the Roller Coaster, the dance hall, the theater, ball park, and in fact every feature of the park…. The new managers have made no definite plans for the summer as yet, but they intend to make the park more attractive than it has been before.”
