40 years ago: City commission reviews sidewalk proposals

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 20, 1972:

The Lawrence City Commission had a full schedule of agenda items coming up for discussion at their Tuesday meeting. One resolution was to be presented to consider the advisability of new sidewalk construction on both sides of Massachusetts Street from the south line of Seventh to the north line of North Park Street. It had been proposed that the sidewalks be widened from their current 15.5 feet to 17.5 feet. However, under the new “sawtooth” curb plan approved on Friday, there would be no reduction in the width of the traffic lanes. An update to the city’s electrical code was also being considered, including the amount of experience necessary to obtain an electrician’s license. Also under discussion were the placing of stop signs at 19th and Haskell and 19th and Harper and the construction of sanitary sewers in the area of 26th and Haskell.
