Around and About for March 17, 2012

Catherine Homan, of Lawrence, received a Master of Arts degree Dec. 17 from the Graduate School of Emory University in Atlanta.

The Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma at their Feb. 25 meeting gave special recognition to member Lynne Renick who has been honored as the Lawrence Secondary Teacher of the Year. New members Loretta Scott, from Virginia, and Sue Clearley, from Sublet, were welcomed into the chapter. Also, new officers were elected for the coming biennium: president, Sally Maack; 1st vice president, Susan Ralston; 2nd vice president, Carolyn Groves; secretary, Georgiana Beverly; and treasurer, Debbie Ellebracht.

Angela and Michael Jerome, of Eudora, announce the birth of their daughter, Elliana Grace Jerome, born March 7, 2012, at Olathe Medical Center. Elliana’s brother, Micaiah Jerome, is 5. Maternal grandparents are Joe and Cathy Cribbs, Eudora. Paternal grandparents are Tom and Dee Jerome, Eudora, and John and Linda Suder, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Rex and Betty Slankard, Eudora, and Burt and Ruth Campbell, Weslaco, Texas. Great-great-grandmother is Hester Finley, Garnett.

Ninety-five students from Kansas University spent part of their winter breaks volunteering across the nation. KU’s student-run Alternative Breaks program centers on service-learning trips that provide opportunities for students to include volunteer efforts in their educational experiences.

This winter, students worked with 13 agencies in 10 states, including rebuilding homes for natural disaster victims, preserving natural habitats and encouraging children to live healthy lifestyles. Each group volunteered for one week from Jan. 7 to Jan. 14. Area participants were as follows: Millie Bartkoski, of Basehor; Allyson Bittner, of Ottawa; Joyce Bohling, of Lawrence; Mitch Colahan, of Lawrence; Erin Eifler, of Lawrence; Ida Greenwell, of Lawrence; Nadia Imafidon, of Lawrence; Mabel (Xinyi) Kok, of Lawrence; Karen Lewis, of Lawrence; Morgan Nilhas, of Lawrence; Bethany Schirmer, of Berryton; Katie Stites, of Lawrence; Lena Warren, of Lawrence.

Meghan and Matthew Allen, of Lawrence announce the birth of their daughter, Madyson Ayleen Allen, born March 3, 2012, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Madyson has a sister, Meaa, 5. Maternal_grandparents are Tony and Brenda Augusto and Rick and Chris Ingrim. Paternal grandparents are Martha Wrenn, and Mike and Jean Allen. Great-grandparents are Antonio Augusto, Ed and Jolene Born, and Ann Schnichels.

Brent Wilson, of Lawrence, was scheduled to return from his two-year mission on March 16. He has been serving in Uruguay as a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Kenneth Andrew Domann, of Winchester and a senior at Maur Hill-Mount Academy, will be honored March 28 by the Kansas University Alumni Association and KU Endowment. He is among 28 seniors from high schools in Atchison County to be recognized for their academic achievements and to be named Kansas Honor Scholars. The Kansas Honors Program recognizes scholars who rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior classes.
