25 years ago: Spring about to break into bloom in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 19, 1987:

  • Spring was to have its official start at 9:52 p.m. tomorrow, and the forsythia bushes in Lawrence were doing their best to put Lawrence residents in the mood for the new season. Margaret Erickson and her small daughter, Shelly, were pictured on the front page as they picked a few of the yellow buds from a bush in their front yard.
  • The proposed 65 mph speed limit for many rural highways had passed both the House and Senate but was facing a possible roadblock in the White House. The problem, according to the Reagan administration, was not with the raising of the speed limit, but with the spending levels of the overall highway bill.
