40 years ago: Parking arrangements on Mass Street still up in the air

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 13, 1972:

  • An announcement was expected soon from Kansas University Chancellor Laurence Chalmers on the appointment of a joint KU-Haskell Indian Junior College inter-school committee. The coordinating body, which was to consist of five representatives from each campus, was to explore the possibility of “mutually advantageous” cooperative ventures and assist with the development of an “American Indian studies program” at KU.
  • Project design consultants for the Massachusetts Street redesign project were not in favor of the proposed “sawtooth” parking design. In a letter to City Manager Buford Watson, one of the designers said that he was “very concerned about the present concept of beautification” for the street. Instead of sawtooth parking, he suggested parallel parking and widened sidewalks.
