25 years ago: Fire department offers home inspections

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 13, 1987:

  • After a bad year of residential fire losses, Lawrence firefighters were developing a voluntary home inspection program. Residents were to be able to request that their homes be inspected for fire hazards, said Fire Chief Jim McSwain. Lawrence’s total fire loss in 1986 had been $877,644, with $413,962 of that being in the residential category.
  • Kansas forward Danny Manning and his fellow Jayhawks had defeated Houston, 66-55, in the NCAA Southeast sub-regional game in Atlanta. While the men’s team was enjoying a short break before their next game, two busloads of Jayhawk fans were planning to join up with pep band members and cheerleaders today to journey to Athens, Georgia, to root for the women’s basketball team. Marian Washington’s team was carrying a 20-12 record into the game against Georgia.
