25 years ago: Seasonal downtown banners unveiled

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 11, 1987:

Lawrence city commissioners had recently approved designs for a downtown banner project. Carol Shy, Main Street program director for the Downtown Lawrence Association, had unveiled banner designs created by local artists for the four seasons. The commission had voted 4-1 in the fall, with Commissioner Mike Amyx against, to earmark up to $15,000 for the project, in which the canvas banners would be hung from lampposts at several points along Massachusetts Street. “They are pretty, but I still want it to be said that I think $15,000 is a lot of money for banners,” Amyx said.
