100 years ago: Winter continues wet and cold for Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 10, 1912:

  • “Rain! Sleet! Snow! Thus provided the weather man for over Sunday and an ample quantity of each. Following the continued snows that have been falling spasmodically for the last two weeks came the rain of yesterday morning. This was accompanied by a drop in temperature and gradually the precipitation was converted from rain into sleet…. During the night another change and a rise in temperature resulted in snow, more of that same kind of snow of which so much has already fallen this winter. Street car service was again threatened by the fall of snow, but by keeping plows out all night the company was able to keep the tracks open and to furnish the regular service this morning.”
  • “In the near future it is very probable that a milk ordinance will be introduced in the city council by the terms of which the people of Lawrence will be insured good milk. This ordinance is now being used successfully in Topeka, Hutchinson, Parsons, Atchison, Hiawatha, Wichita, Kansas City and Ottawa. The purpose of the ordinance is to create the office of milk inspector in the city and providing for his appointment and regulating the sale and delivery of milk and cream in the city.”
  • “William E. Payton, editor of the Peabody [Kan.] Herald, has just received letters from two Swedish maidens, who have learned of the American leap year, asking his assistance in securing Kansas husbands for them.”
