From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 9, 1912:

• “According to George F. Kunz, president of the American Scenic and Historical Preservation Society, Lawrence is to be recognized by that organization, for not only has Lawrence beautiful natural resources for parks, but there are many splendid chances for development. It was not for this purpose that Dr. Kunz came to Lawrence but to speak this evening at Fraser Hall on the subject of ‘Precious Gems,’ but ‘Gems’ are merely Dr. Kunz’s business. He is interested in a large number of projects in New York City that stand for the conserving of natural beauty where possible and for the preservation of famous historical places.”
• “‘It’s not Roosevelt talk there. They are all saying what a nice man Mr. Taft is and how he has not had his opportunity. Most of the men are too busy talking politics to do business. In fact there is not much business to be done. It’s very quiet in the far east. The middle west is better.’ That is what A. D. Weaver said this morning. He has just returned from an extended stay in New York City where he has been making purchases for his store here and naturally he found that politics are the topic of the hour there. Mr. Weaver made many beautiful purchases for his store here, including many ready-to-wear garments. He says that the skirt styles are still narrow — in fact they are made narrower.”
