40 years ago: State lawmakers tussle over legal drinking age

March 8, 2012

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 8, 1972:

  • The Kansas Senate today approved a bill to lower the age of majority in Kansas from 21 to 18, including a provision that those 18 and older would be permitted to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages. The Senate had amended the bill to include the alcohol provision after the House had passed a version keeping the legal drinking age at 21. The House was expected to reject the amendment and send the bill to a conference committee to hammer out the disagreement.
  • News came from Hutchinson, Kansas, that their high school's dress code had been temporarily altered. The ban on beards and sideburns was lifted in order to allow students and teachers to grow beards for the town's centennial celebration.
