From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 8, 1987:

• Several local officials were expected to be present for the grand opening of the new Lawrence facility of the Student Loan Marketing Association, or Sallie Mae. The ribbon-cutting ceremonies were to take place at the $4.2 million building on the following morning, with an open house for the public on the following Saturday. New employees had begun settling into their new workplace in mid-February.
• Kansas University had defeated the Oklahoma Sooners at the Big Eight semifinal basketball game at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. The Jayhawks were to meet Missouri in the tournament final at 3 p.m. today.
