40 years ago: Car chases and presidential races

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 7, 1972:

  • Area police were still searching for a lime green 1968 or 1969 Mustang which had eluded them during a chase just after midnight. The chase had started at 23rd and Louisiana and had gone three miles east on K-10, then south and east near Olathe, where officers had lost the vehicle’s trail.
  • The first primary ballots of the 1972 presidential election were being cast this morning in New Hampshire. Voters in Dixville Notch had turned out at midnight in frigid conditions to cast 11 votes for incumbent President Nixon, 1 for Sen. George McGovern (D-South Dakota), and 5 for Sen. Edmund Muskie (D-Maine). Today’s primary in New Hampshire was the first of 24 that were scheduled in the next 16 weeks.
