Why is it necessary to tell people "Don't leave valuables in your car. But if you do, hide them."?

That is especially true if you have a convertible. I once had my convertible top slashed and the dashboard of my car completely broken, to steal a $50 stereo. It had only cost $150 new.

It cost $700 to replace the top. But, since it would have cost well over $1,000 to replace the dashboard, I never did get it fixed.

I had absolutely nothing in my convertible, didn't stop them from cutting the top and looking anyway.

After that, I never locked that car again.
