25 years ago: Commission field narrowed to six after city primary

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 4, 1987:

Election officer Pat Wells was pictured on the front page posting election tallies on a blackboard at the Douglas County Courthouse. In a fairly close race, Bob Schumm had won the most votes in the City Commission primary, with Ernest Angino coming in second. Schumm had served as a commissioner from 1979 to 1982 and was “pleased and surprised” at the results. Other candidates who would go forward to the April 7 election were Dennis Constance, Mike Rundle, Howard Hill, and Ellis Hayden. Incumbent commissioner David Longhurst, who had been the top vote-winner when elected in 1983, had been edged out of the race by just five votes. Election officials reported that they were pleased with the processing of the votes this year. With the help of the new electronic ballot counter, they had counted the 8,423 ballots in less than two hours.
