25 years ago: Early-morning turnout appears light in city primary today

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 3, 1987:

  • Voters were not showing themselves to be early risers this morning as the city primary kicked off. A noontime check of polling places indicated that only about a tenth of eligible residents had cast their ballots so far. Voters were to reduce a field of 10 candidates to six finalists for the three City Commission spots opening up this year.
  • Eight panelists had been featured at a recent Kansas University forum titled “Campus Parking: What Can Be Done and Will It Help?” The forum, sponsored by KU’s student-run radio station KJHK, described problems and possible solutions for scanty parking along Sunnyside and near Wescoe Hall.
  • The versatile and popular entertainer Danny Kaye had died earlier this morning at the age of 74. Born David Daniel Kaminsky in 1913, Kaye had received many honors during his lifetime for his stage, movie, and television roles, including a knighthood conferred by Denmark’s Queen Margrethe for his portrayal of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. He had also received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1982 for his charitable works.
