2012 warmer, wetter than usual

It probably comes as little surprise to anyone in Lawrence that it’s been warmer than usual the past few months.

Recent numbers provided by the Kansas State Climatologist’s Office show that average temperatures from December, January and February are several degrees above normal.

Here’s a look at this year’s average temperatures and how they rank since 1909:

• December 2011: 37.9 degrees, or 4.3 degrees above average; 20th warmest.

• January: 33.9 degrees, or 4.1 degrees above average; 21st warmest.

• February: 37.7 degrees, or 2.9 degrees above average; 33rd warmest.

Precipitation numbers also show 2012 to be a weather oddity compared with historical numbers. While January saw just .01 inch of precipitation — an inch below normal — February proved to be much wetter than normal, registering 3.1 inches of precipitation, 1.5 inches above normal.
