40 years ago: Striking KU employees reach settlement

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 1, 1972:

  • A nine-day strike at Kansas University came to an end today as civil service employees arrived at a settlement agreement with their employer. Some of the issues discussed during the strike had included a lack of salary increases since November 1970 as well as worker safety, overtime, promotion and transfer policy, work classification, weekend work, eating facilities and grievance procedures.
  • The early spring weather which area residents had been enjoying was gone. A cold wave had appeared at 3:30 a.m. today, dropping temperatures in true Kansas fashion from 62 degrees to below freezing in a matter of hours. Today’s noon reading was 26 and dropping, compared to yesterday’s noon temperature of 76.
