Topeka lamp post falls onto Lawrence police vehicle

A lamp post around noon Tuesday in Topeka fell onto the hood of an unmarked Lawrence police car parked near the Statehouse, a Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Officer Patrick Saleh, of the Capitol Police unit, said the post fell onto the unoccupied car parked in a law enforcement lot on Ninth Street between Topeka Boulevard and Harrison Street west of the Statehouse. Police briefly closed Ninth Street as Westar Energy workers retrieved the light pole about 12:45 p.m.

Saleh said emergency officials wanted to make sure the wires to the pole did not present an electrical danger before they reopened the street.

A Lawrence police employee was able to drive the unmarked vehicle away, he said.
