40 years ago: Lawrence City Band represents cross-section of population

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 25, 1972:

A front page article this week featured the Lawrence City Band, whose members came from all walks of life. While some were professional musicians, others worked in other fields by day, reserving their music skills for the public appearances and concerts at which they donated their time and talents. For example, conductor William Kelly was the Kansas University registrar by day, as well as being a former high school and college band director. Some KU professors and students were represented among the musicians, as well as teachers, housewives, accountants, and business owners. A geologist could be found in the clarinet section; radio station KANU director Dick Wright was playing alto sax, and Clyde Bysom of Reuter Organ Co. played the tenor sax. In addition to the weekly band concerts in South Park in the summertime, the band had also appeared at the Art in the Park festival and was scheduled to be featured at the Jaycee fireworks display in Memorial Stadium on the Fourth of July.
