25 years ago: Racing across U.S., bicycle riders expected to zip through Lawrence today

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 25, 1987:

The lead bicycle rider in the sixth annual “Race Across America” was expected to pass through Lawrence soon. Mike Secrest of Flint, Michigan, had reached Norton, 287 miles west of Lawrence, at 7:00 this morning, and was expected to enter Lawrence sometime later this afternoon or this evening. The Dillons Super Store, 3000 W. Sixth, was an official race stop for the riders on their almost-nonstop ride from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.They had enjoyed only 90 minutes to two hours of sleep per day since leaving the West Coast five days earlier.
