40 years ago: ‘Repeat’ garage sales not an issue here, city manager says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 24, 1972:

  • At their weekly meeting, the Lawrence City Commission concurred with the recommendation of City Manager Buford Watson to not adopt any garage sale ordinance at this time. As reported earlier, some secondhand dealers in Lawrence had expressed concern about “repeat” sellers running unregulated businesses under the guise of garage sales. However, as Watson had reported, only a smattering of advertised sales in the past few months had been from the same sellers. Watson did promise the commissioners to send letters to these sellers warning them that the city could use the zoning law to prosecute them for holding regular sales in areas that were not properly zoned.
  • In other action, commissioners agreed to change the name of Goodrich Road to Packer Road at the request of Jim Schwartzburg, owner of Packer Plastics.
