From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 23, 1987:

A search of the disposal route of some radioactive material accidentally removed with the trash from a Kansas University location had failed to turn up any evidence of the lost material. Michael Lemon, KU’s assistant radiation safety officer, and Ben Friesen, biochemistry professor and director of radiation safety service, had slowly retraced the route from KU to the Jefferson-Douglas County landfill where an obsolete device had been taken earlier in the week. Using a special detection instrument, they had traveled at the speed of two to three miles per hour, but no radiation had been found on the route. A search had not been made at the landfill itself. Officials reiterated that the lost material was not thought to pose any threat to the public.
