25 years ago: Local radio station requests new tower

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 16, 1987:

  • Among other planning items on the agenda for the next meeting of the Douglas County Commission was a request from radio station KLZR-FM to install a new 710-foot signal tower three miles west of Lecompton. The tower, which would stand on the south side of Douglas County Road 1023, would help avoid a conflict of airwave use with KLTY-FM of the Kansas City area. In other items, the commission was also scheduled to consider a conditional use permit to build a 200,000-gallon elevated water tower a few miles southwest of Lawrence for Water District No. 5.
  • Lawrence was in its fifth straight day of temperatures in the 90s to 100. The livestock safety index was expected to reach the emergency level in eastern Kansas and the danger level across the rest of the state today.
