40 years ago: Legendary LHS gymnastics coach remembered

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 11, 1972:

L. R. “Dad” Perry passed away this week at the Kansas University Medical Center. Mr. Perry had served as a Lawrence High School athletic coach for 38 years, having joined the city school system in 1926 after teaching in Mankato, Ada, and Minneapolis, Kansas. During his coaching career he led the 1948 team that won the Kansas Class AA basketball championship. He was best remembered, however, as an outstanding gymnastics coach, having organized the first state high school gymnastics meet in Kansas in 1958 and then leading his team to the state championship from 1960 to 1964.
