25 years ago: City rejects Oread apartment-complex plans

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 10, 1987:

Lawrence city commissioners this week unanimously rejected plans for a five-unit apartment building in the Oread neighborhood. The plan for a three-story 5-plex at 1132 Ohio had been strongly opposed by several members from the Oread Neighborhood Association and the Lawrence Preservation Alliance. Residents of the area had long expressed dissatisfaction with the density and quality of new apartments in the neighborhood. “Most of the buildings that I have seen being developed in that area really aren’t compatible. They stink,” said Dennis Duermeier, 1115 Ohio.
