From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 8, 1972:

In this view looking south from the 800 block of Massachusetts, workers are unearthing trolley tracks and ties from the old Lawrence streetcar line.

• The Lawrence streetcar lines so popular in the early 1900s were being unearthed and removed in the 800 block of Massachusetts Street today. A front-page picture showed several bent and broken trolley tracks and ties that had been dug up and set aside for later pickup and disposal. The street construction was part of a downtown improvement project designed to beautify four blocks of Massachusetts. Many residents continued to visit the construction area, as well as the dumping area near the livestock sale barn (900 E. 11th), to pick up old Lawrence-made bricks that were being uncovered and discarded during the project.
• The Lawrence area was enjoying hot, sunny weather for the beginning of June. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 90s during the day, with southerly winds and no precipitation in sight. These conditions had caused a whopping 76 percent increase in the city’s demands for water and electrical power in the past several days, but spokesmen for both utilities said that they could foresee no problems in meeting needs in the immediate future.
