A 37-year-old Basehor man accused of trying to hire a man to kill his wife pleaded not guilty in federal court Thursday in Kansas City, Mo.

According to court records, federal authorities accuse Lee D. Smith, who once lived in Eudora, of agreeing to pay a man $1,800 to murder Smith’s wife, and Smith is accused of driving the man on May 9 from Kansas City, Mo., to show him the parking lot where his wife worked in Overland Park.

Prosecutors say the man who Smith allegedly asked to commit the murder was a confidential informant to law enforcement, and Smith’s wife was never in danger.

According to court records, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah W. Hays scheduled Smith’s next hearing for June 20. Smith remains in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

A judge in May declined to set bail based on the nature and circumstances of the charge he faces and because Smith appeared to have a mental condition that could affect whether he made it to scheduled court appearances, according to a detention order filed in the case.
