KU picks up another commitment as Dallas cornerback taps Jayhawks

He might not be rated as the top player in the Class of 2013, but he was the top performer at the Nike Football SPARQ Combine earlier this year.

And now he’s a Jayhawk.

Tuesday night, the Kansas University football team picked up an oral commitment from Colin Spencer, a 5-foot-10, 174-pound cornerback from Woodrow Wilson High in Dallas.

Spencer’s score of 141.12 was the top score at the SPARQ Combine and the third best score of all time. He ran a 4.42-second 40-yard dash, a 3.87-second shuttle run and also turned in a 41.7-inch vertical jump.

Sources told the Journal-World that Spencer is regarded throughout Texas as an elite athlete who could play a number of different positions including corner and wide receiver. His immediate future appears to be on defense, and the Dallas native told Jon Kirby of that he was thrilled to commit to a school which featured former Dallas Cowboys coach Dave Campo as its defensive coordinator.

“Knowing what he can teach me as a corner is great,” Spencer told Kirby. “I’m excited to learn a little of what he knows.”

Spencer also had high praise for KU coach Charlie Weis.

“... He seemed like a great guy,” Spencer told Kirby. “You can tell he cares a lot about people.”

KU was the first school to offer Spencer and that appeared to make the difference. He chose Kansas over interest from TCU, Arkansas, Texas A&M;, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, and SMU and still plans to attend The Opening, in Oregon, which will feature some of the top prospects in the nation.

Spencer becomes KU’s fifth commitment in the Class of 2013 and the second in two days. He joins Shawnee Mission East quarterback Jordan Darling, who committed Monday night, as well as Bishop Miege QB Montell Cozart, Basehor-Linwood High tight end Ben Johnson and St. Louis linebacker Kellen Ash.
