Around and About for June 2, 2012

Rachel and Matthew Habiger, of Wichita, announce the birth of their son Isaac Matthew Habiger, on May 8, 2012, in Wichita. Isaac joins brother Easton James, 21 months. Maternal grandparents are Judith Hutton, of Wichita, and Brian Belden, of Lyons. Paternal grandparents are Barbara and Ben Habiger, of Lawrence.

Calvert K. Pfannenstiel, who will be a sophomore this fall at Kansas University, majoring in engineering physics, is spending this summer working as a research assistant at the Paul Scherrer Institute near Zurich, Switzerland. He is working with a test beam that mimics the environment inside the Large Hadron Collider run by the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, in Geneva. During the school year Pfannenstiel works as an undergraduate research assistant for professor Alice Bean in the KU physics department, and the work he is involved with this summer is in preparation for experiments that will be run by Bean at CERN.

Amy Barnes, of Ottawa, is a new Peer Academic Leader, or PAL, at Emporia State University. PALs work with the Student Advising Center to assist freshmen. Peer Academic Leaders also serve as role models for first-year students.

Grace Bova, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List at DePaul University in Chicago for the winter quarter of 2012. To qualify, students must earn above a 3.0 GPA.

Alan Stucky, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., for the winter 2012 semester. To qualify, students must earn a semester GPA of 3.6 or better.

Marianne Sansom, of Eudora, has been named to the Dean’s List at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., for the 2012 spring semester. To qualify, students must earn a semester GPA of 3.4 or better.

Washburn University student Stefanie Stuever, of Lawrence, is the recipient of a $3,500 scholarship awarded by the Mulvane Art Museum’s Women’s Board. Two works by Stuever are on exhibit in the 2012 student art show through June 3 at the Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University.

She is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Ethan Fisher, of Lawrence, a student in the College of Science and Engineering at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., has been named to the spring semester Dean’s List. To be eligible, students must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Katherine Steir, a Lawrence High School graduate, graduated cum laude from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., on May 12 with a degree in history. In addition, Steir was honored at the Macalester College Awards Ceremony on April 24.

Ashley Hoehn, of Wellsville, a Fort Hays State University senior majoring in health and human performance, placed first in the professional category of Public Service Campaign in the Kansas Professional Communicators state competition.

Kate Slayton, of Tecumseh, was selected to receive the Virginia Endly Memorial Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year at Emporia State University. She is a freshman psychology major. This is Slayton’s second consecutive year to receive an Endly, which is a full-ride scholarship offered by the university.
