25 years ago: Lawrence police chief announces retirement

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 3, 1987:

Lawrence Police Chief Dick Stanwix today announced his retirement effective June 19 after a 34-year career as a city police officer, the past 18 of which had been spent as police chief. Stanwix, 56, said that he was making his retirement slightly earlier than originally planned because of a change in the state retirement law, going into effect on July 1, which would make retirement less attractive financially. He said he was planning to stay in Lawrence, adding, “I was born and raised here, I don’t want to leave.” He planned to seek other employment locally as he was still raising children and because he thought he would become bored with retirement.
