25 years ago: Proposed eastern trafficway costs twice as much as southern route

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 2, 1987:

  • A list of comparative statistics recently had been presented to Lawrence city commissioners. The cost comparison of the proposed south Lawrence trafficway and the alternative east Lawrence route indicated that construction of the eastern route would cost nearly twice as much as building the longer southern road. The commission was scheduled to discuss the feasibility of an eastern bypass at its meeting tonight.
  • A top AIDS expert in Washington today estimated that one in 30 of all young and middle-aged men in the U.S. was already infected with the virus. However, he accepted the official Public Health Service that perhaps one in 30 men were infected. “That’s a lot of men, and one in 30 is a very high number,” said Dr. James Curran, director of the AIDS program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
