Man charged in connection with disturbance involving a handgun on Melrose Lane

Douglas County prosecutors Friday charged a 53-year-old Leavenworth man in connection with a disturbance involving a handgun Thursday afternoon at a Lawrence apartment.

According to court records, prosecutors initially charged Gary Anthony Lee with kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated battery. Cheryl Wright, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman, said the aggravated battery charge was later dismissed but that prosecutors might re-file it under a different statute number later.

Lawrence police arrested Lee Thursday evening as a suspect in the disturbance reported about 5 p.m. in the 2400 block of Melrose Lane. A woman reported she was threatened during the incident, but no injuries were reported. According to the charges, prosecutors accuse Lee of pointing a handgun at the woman and demanding money from her.

Lee’s bond was set at $20,000 Friday afternoon, and acting pro-tem Judge Randy McGrath scheduled his next appearance for Tuesday.
