Lawrence man, 27, charged with kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault

Douglas County prosecutors Monday filed several charges, including kidnapping and aggravated assault, against a 27-year-old Lawrence man accused of forcing his way into an apartment while two occupants slept early on Sunday.

A judge set bond at $20,000 on Monday for Tomas Garcia Jr., who was charged with two counts of kidnapping, one count of aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor criminal damage.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were called to the 2100 block of West 26th Street when they located Garcia and determined he was intoxicated. McKinley said the victims alleged Garcia forced his way into the apartment while they slept. The victims left the apartment at one point, but McKinley said they accused Garcia of threatening to use a gun during the incident. Garcia’s next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
