Petition drive against Overland Park sculpture continues

July 30, 2012

— Organizers say they're close to reaching the required number of signatures for a petition drive aimed at removing a sculpture of a partially clad woman from a suburban Kansas City park.

Phillip Cosby, Missouri and Kansas director of the American Family Association, says the sculpture at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is obscene and should be removed.

Cosby is seeking 4,500 signatures required to empanel a grand jury, which would then investigate a charge of promoting obscenity to a minor.

He said Monday he has about 3,500 signatures and hopes to have the rest by Aug. 7. He expects to file the petition Sept. 1 with the Johnson County court, which would call the 15-member grand jury.

The sculpture was donated to garden by a group of Chinese artists.

Could they install the statue beside the SLT?

another fundie organization that's ashamed of their own bodies and scared to death of a woman's. This god character they love so much should be brought up on charges, since every single person ever was born naked. And they were children at that! Some sort of sick pedophile he must be. If this statue is removed based on this petition, I might just take it upon myself to find a partially nude jesus in the throes of death to be disturbing as well, and run a petition to have all instances removed from public view. Your move whackos.

This kind of crap has been around for many years. I remember the story many years ago about some woman who wanted to make "shorts" for some of the statues in a Washington art museum. These kind of people who have a shortage of intellect and reason have been with us for years and can only find things to be against as their crowning achievement in life.

Don't forget about John Ashcroft. Had curtains installed to block the view of a statue of Lady Justice during televised speeches because one breast wasn't covered by the toga. I always thought it was ironic that the Attorney General was hiding Justice.

On a side note, the OP Arboretum is fantastic place. If you're into the shrubs & perennials & annuals & trees, it's well worth the visit. Serene & beautiful.
