Mystery man claims close encounter with train

An unknown man led authorities from Jefferson and Shawnee Counties on a strange search early Monday morning.

Shortly after midnight Shawnee County dispatch received a call from a man who said he was stuck to a Union Pacific train.

The man claimed to have been sitting by the railroad track near U.S Highway 24 and Calhoun Bluff Road in Shawnee County, when a train came by and became entangled with his backpack. The man said that he could not get loose from the backpack and said he could not jump off the train because of the high speed. He was still able to make a call from his cellphone requesting help.

Shawnee County dispatchers took the call and contacted Union Pacific Railroad to get them to stop the train.

The man then called 911 and informed Jefferson County dispatchers that he had managed to get off the train but had no idea where he was. He also said he was uninjured and his mother was going to pick him up. He was believed to be somewhere in Jefferson County at the time.
