Around and About for July 21, 2012

Shannon Roberts, of Baldwin City, was named to the spring 2012 Academic Honors List at Spring Arbor University in Michigan. The Academic Honors List recognizes full-time students who have received a GPA of 3.7 or higher.

Meng Wang, of Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University in Atlanta on May 14.

Mallory Bedford, of Perry, was among 25 senior nursing students who were recognized during the pinning ceremony at the end of the spring 2012 semester at Emporia State University.

Hutchinson Community College has announced the President’s Honor Roll for the spring 2012 semester. To qualify, students must have a 4.0 GPA for the semester. Area students include Lori Goodfellow, Basehor; Andrew Krzanowsky and Edith Williams, both of Lawrence; and James Tweed, Winchester.

Winners have been named in the 2012 Fight the Bite Poster Contest, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 75 entries from Kansas. The 2012 Kansas fifth-grade winner is Kassidie Womack, of Lawrence. Each winning artist received $50 and a certificate. Their posters will be used in educational materials nationwide. This contest encouraged students to use art to show the ways they can protect themselves and their families from diseases spread by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas.

Thomas Henry, of Lawrence, has been named to the Spring 2012 Dean’s List at Syracuse University. To qualify, students must achieve at least a 3.4 GPA during the semester. Henry also graduated from Syracuse in May, with a Bachelor’s degree in English and textual studies, and a minor in music industry.

Sarah Henry, of Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List at Northeastern University in Boston. Dean’s List students must have at least a 3.5 GPA.

Dayle and Mike Black, of Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Molly Grace Black, on July 11, 2012, in Overland Park. Molly joins brother James Maxwell, 2. Maternal grandparents are Dianna and Gordon Dryer, Blue Springs, Mo. Paternal grandparents are Jo and Mike Heidrick, Salina. Great-grandmother is Pauline Brown, Salina.
