Lawrence Walmart stores latest targets of false bomb threats

July 29, 2012

Lawrence police responded to two bomb threats directed at Lawrence Walmart stores just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Walmarts at 550 Congressional Drive and 3300 Iowa both reported threats within minutes of each other made by a male caller just before 2:30 a.m.

Police investigated, but the threats turned out to be false.

Similar false threats were made just before 4:30 a.m. toward a Walmart in Leavenworth.

These three threats come on the heels of a string of false threats made in Missouri and Oklahoma.

The Associated Press reported that stores in eight Missouri communities had received similar threats on Friday. A false bomb threat shut down a store in Claremore, Okla., on Wednesday.

As of 4 p.m. Sunday, the Lawrence Police Sgt. Randy Roberts reported that no further information was available.

When I saw the news about the bomb threats in Missouri I knew that there would be copycat threats here in Lawrence. Even with the haters, this is such a 'me too' town.

Yep, knew it was just a matter of time. Sounds like the caller was pretty anxious! 2:30am?!?! Wow - that hit at peak time!

I hope everyone made it out ok without panicking. I'm sure walmart has procedures for this sort of foolishness.

The worst part if we are to assume this is politically motivated is that it was poorly aimed at distressing the bottom part of the 99%. The people affected were low-wage workers and people that can't afford target.

It could be just some local loon that made a copycat call, but any of these bomb threats against a retailer that serves the working class and poor that might have been made by some of that OWS garbage is like OWS poking itself in it's own eye. Dumb.

Regardless of who is doing it, the threats are more heinous because they follow a tragedy where innocent people living normal lives were killed for no reason.

Did they evacuate the store or did they let everyone keep shopping, oblivious to any threats?

Or, these calls could be a distraction to shoplift the store. They rush you out with your pockets full of merchandise or even a shopping cart of items you bag yourself.
