Firefighters tend to rural building, grass fires Saturday in Tonganoxie area

An estimated 50 firefighters from seven fire departments responded Saturday to a rural Tonganoxie fire that destroyed a workshop and nearby truck and tires.

Firefighters were called out about 4 p.m. to the fire at 22795 George Rd., roughly 2 miles northwest of Tonganoxie.

Tim Smith, Tonganoxie Township fire chief, said the workshop, as well as a truck and an estimated 30 standard tires were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene. Some ambers from the fire landed on the property owner’s home roughly 75 feet away, but firefighters tended to the roof and there was no damage to the house, Smith said.

Assisting Tonganoxie Township were Tonganoxie City and Alexandria, Fairmount, Stranger, Sherman and Union township fire departments.

The workshop and truck were a total loss, Smith said. Cause of the fire was unknown Saturday evening, he said.

Tonganoxie Township firefighters were assisting Tonganoxie City firefighters in tending to a grass fire about 3:30 p.m. just south of Tonganoxie Middle School when they received the call for the second fire.

Tonganoxie fire Capt. John Callaghan said firefighters were able to get the fire under control.

“Just a hot, dry day,” Callaghan said.
