40 years ago: 31st Street to be graded, paved

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 26, 1972:

  • Blacktopping on 31st Street between Haskell and Louisiana was scheduled to begin in August, with grading on the second phase, between Louisiana and U.S. 59, was also on the horizon. The low bidder on the second phase was N. R. Hamm Contractors of Perry, who had also been the successful bidders for the first phase. Blacktop for the second phase was to begin next summer.
  • Douglas County had surpassed its record of absentee ballots issued for a primary election with 545 having been issued as of noon today. Of the county’s approximately 25,000 registered voters, it was estimated that about 9,000 would vote in the Aug. 1 primary.
