Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. FUNdamental Softball: Learn the proper mechanics and techniques to playing softball. Emphasis placed on fundamental instruction teaching the aspects of pitching, catching, fielding, base-running and hitting. Coach and team consulting available, too. Lawrence Bicycle Club: Beginner’s Ride takes place Mondays through Labor Day. 6:15 p.m. for Tech Tips, 6:45 ride begins. Meet at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold. 10-15 miles at 10-12 mph. Helmets, water bottle required.

Henrickson tourney: The eighth annual Bonnie Henrickson Golf Tournament will be Aug. 25 at Alvamar Country Club. Registration for the event is available for singles, pairs and foursomes. All proceeds from the tournament will go to Kansas University women’s basketball and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center. The event includes a four-person scramble at 1 p.m., followed by a dinner and live and silent auctions at 6 p.m. Prizes will also be awarded for best four-women team, best four-man team, best four-person mixed team, longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. Free State fall softball camp: The 5 Tool Softball School (grades 4 through 8) is taking registration for the camp that will be offered at Free State High School this fall. Camp will be held on Sunday afternoons Aug. 26 through Sept. 30. For more information, contact FSHS softball coach Lee Ice at

Soccer club: Lawrence Soccer Club PUMA FC-West Premier U9 Girls team is looking for two female soccer players born before Aug. 1, 2004. Team training is in Lawrence, and games will be played in Olathe. Contact coach Riny de Boer at and/or call 550-3452.

LHS fall sports meeting: The Lawrence High fall sports informational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 5 in the LHS auditorium. Fall sports forms may be submitted at the meeting. Notaries will be available. The fall forms deadline is Aug 9.

FSHS parents meeting: Free State High will hold a parents informational sports meeting from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Aug. 8, for parents to turn in physicals and other required sports forms. There will be a notary on site.

Rebels 11U tryouts: 2013 Kansas Rebels 11U baseball will hold tryouts 4:30-6:30 p.m., Aug. 12 at YSC field No. 3 for the spring 2013 season. For information, contact Pat Karlin at

Phenix 8U seeking: Lawrence Phenix 8U fastpitch team is looking for girls that are not 9 before Jan. 1 and are interested in playing competitive fastpitch. This team will play in two tournaments this fall and play in the Lawrence Girls Fastpitch League and a few tournaments next summer. A pretryout clinic and parent meeting will be 7-8:30 p.m. on July 26 at YSC field No. 6. Tryouts will be held on July 28 at a time TBA at Holcom. For information, contact Diane Folks at or 766-3628.

Vipers tryouts: Lawrence Vipers 14U softball will hold tryouts from 10-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 5 at YSC field No. 5. Vipers play tournaments in the Kansas City, Topeka and Lawrence areas and are looking for girls with 1998-99 birthdays for fall and next season. Attack tryouts: DC ATTACK, a girls fastpitch organizations at multiple ages and play levels, will hold tryouts for its 8U team from 7-8:30 p.m., July 31 at YSC field No.6 and 8:30-10 a.m., Aug. 4 at a YSC field TBD. Nine-hole golf tournament: A nine-hole golf event hosted by the Lawrence Police Foundations will be held Aug. 23 at the Orchards Golf Course. Registration and a putting/chipping contest will be held at 4:30 p.m., a shotgun scramble at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $54 per person, $108 for two-person teams. Pickleball silver: Lawrence’s Terry Messenhimer and Jane Harris teamed to earn silver in women’s doubles pickleball at the Sunflower State Games. And Lawrence’s Evan Jorn teamed with Topeka’s TJ Wiechman to earn a bronze in men’s 41-50 doubles. For information on the local pickleball scene, contact Jorn at 312-9851 or

MS bike ride coming: The Kansas City and Topeka annual Bike MS rides will converge on Lawrence. On. Sept 22, 2,000 cyclists are expected to start at either Garmin’s headquarters in Olathe or Shawnee Heights Middle School in Topeka and ride to an overnight in Lawrence, then a ride to Olathe on Sept. 23. There also will be a shuttle from Lawrence to Olathe for Saturday-only riders. Designed for riders of all skill levels, the ride has several route options: 37, 75, 101 and 150 miles. The stop in Lawrence’s South Park will include a festival open to riders and the public with music, food and drink, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the MS Society.
