From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 25, 1912:

• “The Booster Club has been out of existence for some time but there is still a small amount of money in the treasury. Those who hold the money have decided that it should be spent and it shall be. The Lawrence Railway and Light Company is giving its poles a nice new coat of paint and it has been agreed that the Boosters may use the corner poles to paint the names of the streets on. The Boosters will pay for this. There has long been agitation favoring the naming of the streets of Lawrence but nothing definite has ever been done. The signs were put up once but they didn’t last long and Lawrence hasn’t a street today that is marked with its name. These signs would be permanent and painted in white on the black poles would be clearly discernible for some distance. It is expected that this work will be done soon.”
• “Mayor Bishop will represent Lawrence at a meeting of representatives of gas burning cities to be held in Kansas City on next Wednesday…. The Public Utilities Commission of St. Joe points out that it is practically certain that there will be a gas shortage, and that some sort of action must be taken to conserve what supply there is. It is understood that there is a plan on foot to discontinue the use of gas as a fuel and use it for lighting purposes only. This will be discussed at the meeting to obtain an opinion from all of the cities concerned.”
• “Better hurry up and register if you want to vote this fall and haven’t already been placed on the registration books. There are still a couple of days remaining to get in shape to vote. The books close on Friday night at 10 o’clock and those who have not showed up by that time will find themselves without a vote this fall.”
