9/11 fire truck coming to Lawrence

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical on Tuesday will host a restored New York City fire truck from the 9/11 attacks as members of the Remembrance Rescue Project visit Lawrence.

Members of the project helped restore the truck, known as Rescue 4. Nine New York City firefighters with Rescue 4 lost their lives trying to save other people at the World Trade Center complex.

Participants in the Remembrance Rescue Project tour the country with the restored truck as a mobile memorial in an effort to honor the 343 New York firefighters who died on 9/11.

Lawrence Fire Chief Mark Bradford said the public can meet firefighters and see the restored truck from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Fire Station No. 5, 1911 Stewart Ave.

The Remembrance Rescue Project is making its way to its final destination in Colorado.
