Damage totals $78K in rural barn fires

A fire that destroyed two barns Tuesday afternoon south of Eudora caused an estimated $78,400 in damage, said Sgt. Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman.

Firefighters were called about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a barn filled with hay was fully engulfed by flames.

A pole barn and frame barn located at 2160 N. 1150 Road, which is about two miles south of Eudora, sustained $8,400 in damage. Lewis said $50,000 worth of equipment and $20,000 worth of hay bales inside the barns were damaged.

Eudora Township and other area fire departments responded to the blaze. The township’s fire chief could not be reached Wednesday about the cause of the fire.
