40 years ago: Divorce rate increasing in Douglas County

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 15, 1972:

The institution of marriage was said to be in trouble in Douglas County, reflecting national trends of the divorce rate almost doubling with marriages decreasing more than 11 percent. Here, marriage license applications filed during the first six months of this year had totaled 378 while 149 divorces had been granted. Some experts elsewhere in the U.S. were speculating that “women’s lib” was partly at fault. “Today’s liberated woman […] is more independent,” said a Chicago divorce lawyer. “She is working and able to support and maintain herself. In many cases, she’s earning more than her husband.” The unidentified lawyer also shared his opinion that some sort of waiting period should be imposed on couples asking for divorces, so that an attempt at reconciliation could be made.
