Candidate forum scheduled for Monday night

A public forum will be held Monday for candidates in contested primary races for the 2nd U.S. House District and three state Senate districts that reach into Douglas County.

The event, co-sponsored by the local Voter Education Coalition and 6News, will be held in the City Commission chambers at Lawrence City Hall. The public is invited to attend.

The three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2nd U.S. House District will answer questions beginning at 7 p.m. Those candidates are Scott Barnhart, of Ottawa; Robert Eye, of Lawrence; and Tobias Schlingensiepen, of Topeka.

Republican primaries are being held in Kansas Senate Districts 2, 3 and 19.

The names of Ronald Ellis, of Meriden, and Jeremy Pierce, of Lawrence, will appear on the ballot for the 2nd Senate District, but Pierce has suspended his campaign. In the 3rd Senate District, Anthony Brown of Eudora faces James “J.C.” Tellefson of Leavenworth.

In the 19th Senate District, Casey Moore, of Topeka and Matthew Windheuser, of Lawrence, face off in the GOP contest.

The forums will be moderated by 6News Anchor Cory Smith and Lawrence Journal-World Editorial Page Editor Ann Gardner and will be televised live on Knology Channel 6. The primaries are Aug. 7.
