100 Good Women plans benefit concert on July 26

July 10, 2012

Lawrence community group 100 Good Women is having a benefit concert from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 26 at the Jazzhaus, 926 Mass.

The group collects and disseminates requests from men, women and families for temporary assistance such as donated furniture, gift cards for groceries and clothing for job interviews.

“We give short-term help to people who have fallen through the cracks of ordinary social services,” board member Mary Howe said.

The benefit will feature music by the Prairie Village People, a primarily ’80s cover band, and the cost is $5. A raffle for a pair of Martin Logan speakers also will be held. Tickets for the raffle are $10. The money raised will go toward buying grocery cards and other commonly needed items for donation, Howe said.

This sounds like a good cause, but, I cannot help but wonder... What cracks, there are more social service agencies here, for food, clothing, bill paying, help w/utility bills, etc etc etc. Even hour homeless population all have cell phones and cigarettes. I am sure there are folks somewhere in Lawrence who have a need, but, how does one detemine who those folks are??? I would say, the one's who truley have a need are the one's not asking for help. They work low paying jobs, struggle to make the bills and medical bills, don't break the law, but work themselves into an ealry grave. These are the people who need assistance, not the Loring Henderson Family of users.

Fine, you go help whomever you deem deserving, but I think that it's rather petty and small-minded to judge those being helped by other people, and to disparage those giving individuals for their generous efforts. Thank you 100 Good Women, and you too, Loring, for your efforts.

Hey consumerwho, If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything......... 100 Good Women are a caring and thoughtful group who are not asking for praise or thanks. Who the hell are you and what have you done for the community lately except to come off like a horses a**.
