25 years ago: Movie producers make offer on county-owned barn, windmill

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 9, 1987:

  • Trans World Entertainment, the company filming the motion picture “Kansas” on location in the Lawrence area, had asked to buy a barn, old corn crib, and windmill then located at the site of the future East Hills Business Park. The land was owned by Douglas County, whose commissioners said that the movie company could have the structures — if they moved them and did not bring them back. Trans World had made an offer of $200 plus all moving and clean-up costs.
  • The attorney for Michael Fargo, the Lawrence man who had been ordered evicted from his federally subsidized apartment, said today that his client would be taking his case to the Kansas Court of Appeals. “The notice of appeal will stop the proceedings against him at least temporarily,” Donald Strole said. “Maybe we can reach a settlement.”
